Middleman

Maybe some people would say it's not fair. That Ray can be here and she, John's soulmate and Ray's wife, can't. Here on a roof in New York city, stretched out on a mattress with John beside him, his hand on Ray's chest, his face tucked against Ray's neck, a being that can fly and lift cars with one hand now utterly at peace, totally relaxed.

And maybe, by someone's estimation, Ray's being unfaithful. Maybe John is, too. Maybe both of them, to the same person.

But, for once in his life that he made single-handedly from molding other's opinions, Ray doesn't care what anyone would think. To him, nothing could be wrong with this.

To them, nothing is wrong with this, and ultimately, that's what really matters.

As he packed his things, off to speak to some of the most powerful people in New York about finally using their powers for good, Mary had stopped him, kissed his cheek, and said, "Give him a kiss for me, okay?"

So he turns his head and kisses the stubbly cheek beside his and says, "That's from Mary."

"Oh?" says John.

He rolls up on his side and kisses Ray deeply and when they finally part, Ray's breathless and John's smiling, and John says, "That's for her."

Then he kisses Ray again, a few quick pecks across his lips and down his jaw, finishing with a nuzzle.

"And that?" Ray asks.

"Just ours," John says, then settles again.

Off somewhere, a siren begins to wail through the streets below. Ray feels John sigh.

Before he can start to explain what Ray already knows, Ray just says, sincerely, "It's fine. I get it. Go."

"Yeah," John says, "Gotta save the world and all," and then he's getting up and pulling on his suit. For a moment he's mostly bare in the moonlight, twisting to pull up the skin-tight material. A god, an angel, a superhero--he's beautiful by any name.

He glances at Ray one more time and then the roof shudders as he blasts off into the darkness, quickly diving down between the buildings. Ray just lays back, looks up at the moon, and smiles.

The End
